I don't know how many of you live East Coast USA, but we just had a huge earthquake! (nothing like Japan's earthquake, but still scary!) It's all over the news right now. All of the stations are saying it was 5.9 or 6.0! I've only ever been through one other earthquake - a tiny 3.0 YEARS ago - but this one made everything shake. I was sitting outside with my mom and one of the babies we look after, while the older kids played in the back yard. Then, everything started vibrating. At first I thought it was the miners blowing up some more rock from the quarry a few miles away (we always feel the TNT blasts at our house) But then everything started to really shake, stuff started falling over, the kids were screaming, and mom was freaking out. Our back porch opens on to a patio THAT'S ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF OUR HOUSE so I was afraid the patio would fall over with us on it... My mom must have had the same thought because she shouted, "GRAB THE BABY!!" and we both took off down the stairs into the yard. We gathered all of the kids together and waited for the shaking to stop. As soon as it started, it stopped. Mom went inside to find out if it really was an earthquake while I stayed with the kids in the yard to keep them safe in case some aftershocks came up. Mom came back out (and brought my shoes with her - I had run into our rocky yard barefoot.... ouch) and told us people were saying it was 5.8 (later moved up to 5.9/6.0) and that the quake's epicenter was about 15 miles (about 24 kilometers) from our house. She said that you could feel the quake as far north as New York and as far south as South Carolina! She also said that we should stay outside for a while. (we didn't want the house to collapse on us if an aftershock came up) so here I am, writing a journal about it a good three hours after it happened. OH YEAH, word is my mom's favorite gas station collapsed! (It sold her favorite drink LOL) You can still hear some sirens too...
Anyway, that's all on the scary earthquake for now, the news spokesman said that we can expect mild aftershocks for up to three days from now. It's just so odd to have an earthquake of this scale in Virginia. We haven't had an earthquake this big since the early 1800's, so yeah..... scary stuff
glad you're okay though!
It was kinda fun though, because I got off of work early! hehehehhhe
though, I"m sure there was some damage around, hope everyone is OK
Well, so far no deaths have been reported so that's good! It's just unusual to have such a big quake in this area so everyone's all excited over the drama of it all! LOL
I had a feeling that there would be an earthquake in the USA soon although I predicted it on the west coast. There has been a lot of activity around that plate the last year (Japan and New Zealand earthquakes). Not just that San Andreas is overdue for one. When that fault line finally cracks it's going to be huge.
Still I imagine it would have been frightening. I have never experienced a quake before so I don't know.
As long as you and your family are okay.
Oh yeah, I'm waiting for half of Cali to fall into the ocean when that one cracks! LOL
XD 2012 deja'vu.
